What it is

A knob snaps off a heater. A clip breaks on a vacuum cleaner. The part costs nothing to make, but nobody sells it any more, so the whole appliance goes to the tip.

The spare-parts library is a growing collection of 3D files for exactly those parts. Each one comes from a real repair:

  1. Measure the broken part and photograph it next to a ruler.
  2. Log it as a request with the owner.
  3. Model it during the following week.
  4. Print it, test the fit, and the owner collects it.
  5. Publish the file, with the appliance make and model in the name, so someone else with the same toaster can find it.

Why it matters

In our list of ideas this scored 18 out of 20, just behind the repair café itself (19): high impact, easy to join, good to film, and nearly free. Over a year it could become the most useful thing the workshop produces.

Three levels

  • Beginner: find and print a part that’s already in the library.
  • Maker: measure and model a simple part with callipers and free CAD software.
  • Expert: parts that take load or heat — material choice, testing, and saying honestly when a printed part isn’t safe for the job.

Where it stands

An idea with a clear method. It starts with the first repair café. Files will be published under an open licence, with a link back to where they came from.

Les plans sont gratuits — the plans are free.
