20 projects, 0 finished

Everything on the bench, and everything waiting for it.

Twenty projects, from a row of sorting bins to a wildlife camera. Each has an honest status and the very next step. Most are still on paper. Two are paused, and we say why. Nothing here is finished yet — when it is, the plans go online free.

Recycling

du déchet à la matière

Bottles, boxes, print waste and dead electronics turned back into useful material.

  • CAD render of a short conveyor belt on an aluminium frame, with a feed hopper, a magnetic head pulley, two collection bins and red emergency-stop buttons. LPA-0010

    The universal recycler

One modular line for household waste and e-waste: identify it, take it apart, sort it by physics into clean streams, then make something new.

    Status: designing
    • beginner
    • maker
    • expert

Architecture and most modules drawn. Nothing built yet beyond the first machines.

  • LPA-0012

    Sorting bins

Labelled bins by plastic type, weighed every week. The cheapest stage of all, and the one every machine depends on.

    Status: idea
    • beginner

Planned. Bins and resin-code labels still to set up; the intake station design builds on it.

  • CAD render of a white foamboard photo booth on a plywood base, with orange printed corner brackets, a light bar on top, a phone cradle at the front and a sample object inside. LPA-0015

    M0 — the intake station

The front door of the recycler: batteries out at the doorway, a flat-pack photo booth, a weight, a label. Every item gets a record.

    Status: designing
    • beginner
    • maker
    • expert

Procedure, booth and labels designed and rendered. Nothing printed or bought.

  • CAD render of a green printed chute tilted on a wooden block, with small metal pieces caught on its floor by a magnet bar slid underneath. LPA-0016

    M2 — magnetic separator

One printed magnet bar used three ways — chute, rake and wand — to pull screws, staples and springs out of shredded plastic.

    Status: designing
    • beginner
    • maker

Printed parts drawn and rendered. Nothing bought or printed yet.

  • CAD render of the recycling line: a conveyor feeding a tall zig-zag column with clear panels, a hose to a cyclone and a vacuum, and collection bins underneath. LPA-0017

    M4 — zig-zag air classifier

A printed zig-zag column on a salvaged shop-vac: rising air lifts paper, film and foam away from rigid plastic.

    Status: designing
    • maker
    • expert

Physics, printed parts and test plan drafted. For 2027; nothing built.

  • CAD render of a tall plywood-coloured cabinet with a viewing window, a feed funnel on top and a yellow emergency-stop box on the side. LPA-0018

    M8 — electrostatic separator

Tumbles mixed flakes to charge them, then lets them fall between charged plates: PET goes one way, PVC the other. Cold, no melting.

    Status: designing
    • expert

Physics model and design drafted for 2027. Nothing built.

  • LPA-0020

    Bottle to filament — Recreator3D MK6

A small machine that cuts a drink bottle into a ribbon and pulls it through a hot nozzle to make 3D-printer filament. Built from an old printer.

    Status: building
    • beginner
    • maker
    • expert

Print pack ready, donor printer inventoried. Hardware still to buy; no filament made yet.

  • LPA-0030

    Le Nez — plastic identifier

A small scanner that shines infrared light on a piece of plastic and names the type, so PVC never reaches a hot machine.

    Status: designing
    • maker
    • expert

Design and parts list done. Parts not ordered yet.

  • LPA-0040

Cardboard pulp for the refill shop

Delivery boxes become moulded pulp — jar cradles and seed paper — pressed on moulds printed from our own bottle filament.

    Status: designing
    • beginner
    • maker

Process and mould rules written. Starts once the bottle machine makes its first spool.

  • LPA-0050

    Filament from print waste

Failed prints and offcuts from our 3D printers are crushed and re-melted into new filament, closing the loop on the workshop's own plastic.

    Status: building
    • maker
    • expert

A desktop extruder and crusher are bought and expected mid-November 2026.

  • CAD render of the shredder's mechanical emergency stop, armed: a toothed lock wheel on the shaft, with a red pawl held up clear of its notches. LPA-0060

    Hand-cranked shredder

An open Precious Plastic shredder, built ourselves, to turn household plastics into flakes. Paused: a bought crusher handles print waste for now.

    Status: parked
    • maker
    • expert

Paused on 15 October 2026. Design and safety work kept; nothing ordered.

  • LPA-0070

    Sheet press for bottle caps

Melts sorted HDPE and PP — mostly bottle caps — into flat, colourful sheets we can cut into tags, line winders and signs.

    Status: idea
    • beginner
    • maker
    • expert

Planned for 2027. Collecting caps by colour in the meantime.

Repair café

réparé ici

A free Saturday session, once a month, to fix broken things together — and print the parts nobody sells.

  • LPA-0005

Repair café — building the kit

A free monthly morning where neighbours bring broken things and fix them together. When a plastic part is missing, we measure it, model it and print it.

    Status: designing
    • beginner
    • maker
    • expert

Planning. The first date is not set yet; it will be announced on the mailing list.

  • LPA-0006

    Printed spare-parts library

Every broken plastic part we model at the repair café becomes a free file, named by appliance make and model, for anyone to print.

    Status: idea
    • beginner
    • maker
    • expert

Starts with the first repair café. No parts in the library yet.

Conservation tech

pour la presqu’île

Cheap, tough electronics for the people protecting Banks Peninsula wildlife.

  • LPA-0080

    Smart predator trap sensor

A cheap solar box on a trap that tells volunteers when it has fired, so they walk to the traps that need them. Co-designed with trappers, or not built.

    Status: idea
    • beginner
    • maker
    • expert

Idea only. We haven't talked with trappers yet — that is the first step.

  • LPA-0085

Le Guetteur — wildlife census camera

A solar camera that recognises what walks past and sends back one line of data, not a thousand photos of grass. For predators and penguins.

    Status: idea
    • maker
    • expert

A written proposal. No conversation with conservation groups yet.

Teaching & kits

pour tous les âges

Every project at three levels, so the same work serves a nine-year-old and an engineer.

  • LPA-0090

    Air-quality sensor kit

A small box that shows dust, CO2, temperature and humidity at a glance. The workshop's own safety instrument, and our first kit.

    Status: designing
    • beginner
    • maker
    • expert

Parts list drafted. First prototype to be built on camera.

  • Shaded relief map of Banks Peninsula seen from above, sea in blue, ridges in sand tones, divided into a grid of 20 tiles with the Akaroa Harbour tile outlined in yellow. LPA-0095

    Akaroa relief maps

Two touchable 3D maps — all of Banks Peninsula and the Akaroa town centre — printed as tiles from open elevation data.

    Status: building
    • beginner
    • maker
    • expert

The map-making pipeline works and two test tiles are ready to print. Nothing printed yet.

The workshop

l’atelier

Fitting out an 1868 cottage without putting a single screw in its walls.

    Caisse — workshop furniture system

Open, modular plywood boxes on a 150 mm grid, joined by printed keys. Like Gridfinity, but for furniture — and nothing fixed to the walls.

    Status: designing
    • maker
    • expert

Version 0.2 of the system drawn, with generated layouts and cutting lists. Nothing cut yet.

  • LPA-0120

    Scan to 3D

A phone video of a room or object becomes a measured 3D model, a mesh and a printable file. Built, then paused.

    Status: parked
    • maker
    • expert

Paused on 21 October 2026. The processing software is built but not switched on.
